• （一）以簡潔而層次分明為原則。
  
  字數及篇幅不必過多，一般中文行文常有個觀念沒有功勞也有苦勞，其實這是不對的。只要切中重心，愈簡單明瞭愈好，也就是說，以簡明扼要為原則。
  另外，通常所謂說明事實的五個W一個H，可以借喻來說明組織你的讀書計畫。
  五個W一個H是指何時（When），何地（Where），何事（What），何物（Which），何人（who），如何（How），需要有條理、有組織地將這些要素嵌入你的讀畫中。
  例如：預定何時動身留學，為何選此時？你為何選擇某州某校就讀？你主修什麼科目？你自身去或有同伴？你的理想的指導教授人選？你如何完成你的學位？等等。
  如此，你才能幫你完成一篇極充實的讀書計畫。
• （二）不要使用太過艱深的字眼。
  
  有些學生會使用較長或較艱深的字眼，取代原先較短而容易的字眼。
  事實上，好的文章是讓人容易瞭解，而非用一堆花俏的文字裝飾，評審委員是沒有時間去推敲你的文字的。
  寫作的時候儘量清楚明白，抒情式的描述方式也盡量避免。
• （三）不要重覆說過的，使評審委員產生厭煩之感。
  
  常常有學生寫讀書計畫時，先來一段沈悶的引文，最後來一段八股的結論，中間就一直重覆所說過的話，實在無聊至極。
  套用一句中國成語「好話不說第二遍」，你可以把握機會深入說明所說過的話；
  但不要重覆已說過的話，無意義地繞圈子是沒有必要的。
• （四）避免概論性的文字（generalities）。
  
  評審委員看了很多申請文件，如果你的文章也是一成不變專繞些概論性的文字，評審委員一定會覺得無趣。
  最好能寫些較具個性色彩的文字，譬如說，如你要寫為什麼要申請貴校，不要只寫概論性的文字，如：obtaining a good liberal arts education（獲得文理科的教育），這些文字頗有催眠的作用。
  試圖寫些特別的，譬如說，有一位你所景仰的人也到此所學校，他給你的一些影響。
  總之，你不使用模糊、概論性的字眼，你的文章就愈成功。
• （五）文章請盡量具體，避免過多的形容詞或副詞。
  
  例如：想像力十分豊富，學習悟力超強，領導才能出眾，宜舉出簡短重要的小事例代替，或者可以用較具體的名詞或形容詞代替。
  不過，也不宜太謙虛，謙虛在中國或許是美德，但在歐美是沒有時間來推敲你的以退進為進，實事求是，不過度誇張也不文過飾非。
  同時，避免使用驚嘆號，因為它雖然可以加強重點，但正式文章不宜如此口語化。
• （六）不要扯得太遠。
  
  不要把小學、初中課外活動經驗或表現扯進來，除非個人在未來研習科目的才能從小就可以看出，否則最好就只舉最近的求學背景。
• （七）主修科目一定要明確、肯定。
  
  不要東拉西扯，使評審委員產生混淆，且對你產生游移不定的觀感。
• （八）請勿在讀書計畫中解釋GPA、TOEFL、GRE、GMAT、不高的原因。
  
  如果你有很特別的理由，可在推薦信中說明；或是申請文件中提過這問題，你才得說明。
  例如許多人在讀書計畫中提到：由於大學時代致力於社團活動，以致於成績不好。
  這句說辭給某些評審委員的感覺是：
  這個笨蛋，為什麼不斟酌自已的實力，把讀書的時間和社團活動的時間作妥善的分配呢？如果志不在讀書，又為何要申請我們的研究所呢？如此造成反效果，又何必呢？

• （九）以下的主題也請勿提及：

  • ◎ 你和你男、女朋友的關係（Your relationship with your girlfriend or your boyfriend）
  • ◎ 你的宗教信仰（Your religious beliefs）
    
    除非你申請教會學校，否則少提你的宗教信仰。
  • ◎ 你的政治觀（Your political views）
    
    不要冒險觸犯評審委員，萬一觀點不同，你就危險了。
  • ◎ 你多愛你自已（How much you love yourself）
    
    只有不成熟的小年輕人，才會整天想自已怎樣。你最好舉實例來表現你多偉大，而非只說明自已多棒。
  • ◎ 大學教育的重要性（The importance of a college education）
    
    大學教育的重要性沒有必要在讀書計畫內提及，如此顯得過於嚴肅且沒有必要。
  • ◎ 賺錢哲學（Make a whole lot of money）
    
    不要感覺你上大學的目的就是為賺錢，評審委員絕不會喜歡貪婪的申請人。

同學在起步草擬讀書計畫時，常易犯一共同錯誤：先苦思，後惶恐，繼而迷失，以致不得不在即有的前輩文章裡抄襲，最後也就只好截取段落，在英文的句子上較功夫，失去梅竹勁雪的自信。
因此，奉勸同學，在草擬讀書計畫時，切勿抄襲，應當了解如何把握重點，並按自已的個性及看法表達。
只要是自已下過功夫的作品，必當有別於他人，顯出自我的特徵，以提昇入學的希望。

瞭解了讀書計畫寫作原則後，接下來，就要決定你的讀書計畫的內容了。
以下是翻譯並加錄加州大學Tane教授對一千多位大四學生所作的演講主文，探討主題是「如何寫讀書計畫」，讓你了解讀書計畫寫作時，每一段應強調的重點，以及如何截長補短、揚巧藏拙。

• （一）不要拖時間，儘快起草：
  推薦信需要時間寫，何況又得配合老師的時間。所以盡快起草你的推薦信，以便使你的推薦者有充裕的時間，為你的推薦信效力。
• （二）提供充份的資訊給推薦者：
  如果你要推薦者能掌握你的優點，你得提供充份的資訊。自然，要盡量具體避免空洞地陳述。
  同時，你也該提供你申請學校截止日期給推薦者參考，以免推薦者耽誤了你的申請。
• （三）各推薦信的打字書信字體：
  宜選不同的型式，以示不同的推薦者。屬需要圈選的表格者，可以直接以手稿填入。
• （四）在邏輯推理下，推薦者不可能知道或瞭解你的特質，請勿提及。
  譬如說，學生課外活動的表現就不適於平常教授正式科目的教授提及，除非教授也參與其中。
  又如其他課堂的表現，除非其他教授曾經提及過，否則不適合此科教授評論學生在其他科目的表現。
  再如，學生如何在圖書館查資料、寫報告花費的時間，一般老師是不可能知之甚詳，除非實在太特殊而略有耳聞，故也不適合在推薦信中提及。
• （五）推薦信的內容盡量簡短有力：
  不要虛無空洞的形容詞，例如他任職於某公司時，勤勞、負責、認真、為人謙虛、誠懇等語句，不宜多引用，最好講出具體事實，才不流於形式，尤其不要抄襲市面的書信範例，以免流於陳腔濫調，落入俗套。
• （六）如果可能的話，推薦者最好與你修的科目或學校相關。
  譬如說：如果你將來計畫主修英文，最好推薦人之一是英文老師。
  又如，如果你申請常春藤名校（IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL），推薦者若也是常春藤名校出身，則其推薦信將更有力。

• （一）與申請者的關係：
  表達清楚何種方式認識。譬如說是老師、指導教授，老闆等。說明交往多久，如果是教授學生關係，對教授的科目做一個簡短的說明，如果推薦信者是你的老闆（主管），請詳細說明你的工作職責。
• （二）推薦者對申請人人格個性特徵的印象：
  譬如學習精神、工作態度、與同事（同學）相處的情形、組織領導能力、學術專長、研究能力、有無工作經驗與否，並加註評語。
• （三）推薦者對你能否順利完成學位的看法：
  譬如說，描述你對特別分配職務上的表現，以表現你的應變能力。又如，申請者是否有其他潛力未發揮？
  如果申請者的成績未盡理想，評述你對申請者的看法。
  解釋申請者雖然形式上的成績未盡理想，卻有極深厚的潛力尚未發揮。
  如果申請者轉系，也可以強調申請者有強烈的學習動機，根據推薦者的觀察，相信以申請者的表現，一定可以成功完成學業。　　　
• （四）推薦者對申請人人格個性特徵的印象：
  譬如學習精神、工作態度、與同事（同學）相處的情形、組織領導能力、學術專長、研究能力、有無工作經驗與否，並加註評語。
• （五）重述推薦者對申請人的支持及能力的確認，以再次肯定對申請人的支持與推薦。

推薦信的模式

第二步，則是分析題型，找出訣竅，有些題目需要小題大作，而有些則可以簡馭繁。最重要的是找對重點，根據所限制的長度，作適度的發揮。

這裡先提出一些申論題寫作要點，綜合各校的要求，特作如下的分析，供同學參考：

最後，注意履歷表內容必須一致、清楚，請用易讀印刷的字體及整齊的編排形式，請用上好的紙質，請勿用爛爛的報表紙，請和工作室列出來的專業表格看齊，評審委員很樂意看到你整齊美麗的履歷表。
